Today, the Office of Global Rankings and International Accreditation at the University of Jordan organized a lecture on the university's research output for the year 2023. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Faleh Al-Sawair, the Vice President for Global Rankings and International Accreditation, and attended by Dr. Ameera Al-Masri, the Dean of Scientific Research, along with several deans, faculty members, researchers, and specialists from the university. During the lecture, Dr. Al-Sawair highlighted the university's remarkable progress in global rankings, both internationally and within the Arab region and locally. He noted that the total number of research papers published by Jordanian universities from 2003 to 2023 in various Scopus journals reached 92,169, with the University of Jordan contributing 23,194 papers. In 2023 alone, 12,000 research papers were published across various fields, with the University of Jordan accounting for 2,400 papers. The distribution of research papers by field was as follows: 45% in Agriculture, 35% in Technology and Engineering, 25% in Social Sciences, and 22% in Medical Sciences. Dr. Al-Sawair reviewed the university's global research rankings for 2024, placing it at 368th out of over 40,000 universities worldwide. Regionally, the University of Jordan ranked among the top 10 universities in the Arab world and was seventh in the Q1 journal category. In terms of quality, impact, and citation, it was fifth in the Arab region. He mentioned that research at the university was distributed across journals as follows: Q1 (45%), Q2 (31%), Q3 (13%), and Q4 (9%) for the year 2023. Additionally, he provided an overview of the number of research papers at the school, department, and specialization levels, along with the number of researchers at the university. Dr. Al-Sawair announced the results for outstanding researchers at the university in 2023, who published under the name of the University of Jordan among the top seven. The first place was held by Dr. Mohammed Turki Al-Sharida from the School of Business with a total of 128 papers. Dr. Mohammed Obaidat, an honorary professor from the King Abdullah II School of Information Technology, ranked second with 42 papers, followed by Dr. Shaheer Al-Momani from the School of Science with 37 papers. Dr. Shahrokh Shariat from the School of Medicine had 34 papers, while Dr. Omar Al-Jawabrah from the School of Hospitality and Tourism in Aqaba ranked fifth with 22 papers. Dr. Fouad Kattana from the School of Science ranked sixth with 21 papers, and Dr. Malik Salam from the School of Medicine was seventh with 20 papers, totaling 304 research papers overall. Dr. Al-Sawair emphasized that the administration of the University of Jordan places great importance on scientific research by increasing research allocations, enhancing publication incentives, linking academic promotions to research output, and encouraging researchers to work within local and global groups to improve the quality of research and increase impact and citation rates. He pointed out that some global rankings assign points for these aspects. In her remarks, Dr. Al-Masri mentioned that the Dean of Scientific Research is in the process of creating a database containing specialized research equipment available in various schools of the university to serve any ongoing or future research endeavors. This initiative aims to prevent redundancy and duplication of equipment, ensuring that research allocations are used effectively to acquire new equipment, thus enhancing the infrastructure for research operations at the university.
